Here’s what we were up to last month:

Crazy Y Offspring

We took the girls back for their first visit to Cali in the 18 months since we moved, and they had a blast.

It was fun to see a lot of our old friends, and Maddy especially loved getting a Santa hat at Dave’s Bix reunion party, as well as her playtime with six of the craziest Yahoo! offspring…

Chuck-e-Cheese

We also celebrated our nephew Jimmy’s 21st birthday, as well as Dave’s birthday of course.

Dave got very “special” treatment this year, because Maddy had saved up a lot of quarters to buy him tokens at Chuck-e-Cheeses. They had lots of fun playing all the games and redeeming prizes.

The girls enjoyed celebrating the holidays more than ever this year, including making gingerbread houses, caroling with neighbors, and having Grandma (Ba Noi) in town for a visit.

(They kind of liked opening their gifts, too.)

Gingerbread decorating Grandma Time

My mom (Ba Ngoai) and I took Hayden for her first viewing of the Nutcracker (Maddy was supposed to go but got sick right before and was devastated to miss it). Hayden watched intently the entire time, and enjoyed sitting on Grandma’s lap. After Maddy recovered, Dave took her to her first symphony performance, where she loved all the holiday music.
Nutcracker Symphony

And after Christmas, we had even more fun outings – the Portland Art Museum, the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie (Hayden’s 1st, with amazingly no squirming or fear of scary scenes), and ZooLights.
Chipmunks ZooLights

It’s going to be tough to start 2012 with nearly as much fun as we ended 2011, but I’m sure we’ll manage. Especially now that we’re getting more home performances like “the Dance of the Lemon Fairy.” Here’s just a short excerpt of the long show, which Maddy and Hayden regaled us with the other night:

Little Helpers http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2011/12/09/little-helpers/ http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2011/12/09/little-helpers/#comments Fri, 09 Dec 2011 22:42:18 +0000 Madelyn http://phamsterworld.com/blog/?p=935 Mommy never gets around to blogging anymore, so it’s time for me to get back on here. Get ready, because I have a lot to share…

Fun and Fear with Santa

I’m SOOOO excited for Christmas this year, it just can’t come soon enough. Mom says I have to think less about what I want Santa to bring for me, and think more about what I could give other people. So, I told her I’m going to take the whole family – mom, dad, Hayden, Jimmy and Uncle Gavin – to Chuck-e-Cheeses. Then she explained how you have to pay money to play those games, which is kind of a bummer. But I decided I’m old enough to do chores.

Helpers

So, I help mom do dishes and clean my room and vacuum the kitchen, and she gives me shiny quarters! The only annoying thing is that Hayden always wants to copy me and so we have to fight over the vacuum now. But that’s okay, because I have a pretty good stack of coins no, so I’m not bothering with the chores as much.

1st tennis class!

Besides spending lots of time doing chores, I’ve also been really enjoying school lately. I kind of enjoyed the tennis class I took last month at first, but then I told mom it was harder than I thought to hit those balls with my racquet. Running around the gym for soccer is easier, but I also get tired from that sometimes.

Pinkilicious

I’ve also had a few very special activities that I want to tell you about. I took mommy to see Pinkilicious: The Musical for her birthday, and it was so cool! My favorite part was when we got to meet the actors at the end and they signed my playbill.

Loving Cousin

Then we got to have my cousins Elijah and Eva come stay with us for a couple days, which was my favorite kind of chaos. It was even better when we got to go stay with them the following week and help Aunt Maren take care of my itty bitty cousin Lorna Lia. I just loved holding her and Hayden gave her lots and lots of kisses.

Almost all cousins

After that, we had a super fun Thanksgiving with everyone at our house. Grandma helped us put on a “show” for the grown-ups, and I ate 4 kinds of desert.

Reveling

Then last week, Grandma took a bunch of us to see Christmas Revels, a show about the longest night that had lots of dancing and singing. I got to dance all around with the audience and actors for the Lord of the Dance song.

Posing

Hayden still isn’t as good as me at talking, but I pretty much know what she’s thinking at all times, so I’ll fill you in on the Hayden happenings also. She paid close attention during the whole Revels show, and loved watching the musicians play their instruments. She actually got scared during two parts (even though I told her it wasn’t real), and she turned around to lean on mom’s shoulder so she couldn’t see the stage. But then when those parts were over she turned back around and was fine.

Lately, she’s been learning lots of letters from playing with our computer and likes to try to sing the alphabet song. She also loves to play hide-and-seek with me, mostly the part where you count and then yell “here I come!” She’s getting better at using the potty, and even does it at school now. Hopefully Santa can find panties small enough for her to put into her stocking.

She definitely has her favorite things, like this Pete Seeger story/song called Abiyoyo. When it comes on in the car, she says “Abiyoyo favite!” When my favorite songs come on, though, she says “doan yike it!” and tries to get mom to skip them.

The other day it was so sunny out that mom took us to a park we haven’t been to in a while, and as soon as we turned on the street of the park Hayden yelled “duck park!” That was pretty impressive, since we were still far from being able to see the park or even see the duck pond.

Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you about my scary accident. This week we were decorating our Christmas tree, and I was soooooo excited that I couldn’t hold still. After dumping every single ornament in a pile on the ground, I ran down the hall to get something and on my way back I wasn’t paying attention and ran full speed into the door frame. I was pretty shocked that my face had hit the wall so hard, but luckily mom and dad were right there and put lots of ice on my bump and my fat lip. Today, you can barely even tell anymore, ‘cept for a few purple spots.

Love,
Maddy

Belated Halloween Recap http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2011/11/13/belated-halloween-recap/ http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2011/11/13/belated-halloween-recap/#comments Sun, 13 Nov 2011 08:32:30 +0000 Meagan http://phamsterworld.com/blog/?p=939 I can’t believe I almost forgot to write a post about how fabulous our Halloween was this year. Maddy, the Super Girl, especially enjoyed every single moment, and we enjoyed watching her enjoy it. Of course Hayden, the Ladybug, had fun too, but in a more it’s-fun-to-drag-my-bucket-around-while-I-plow-through-the-neighborhood sort of way. Here are some favorite photos from the day…

Fun in the East Coast Sun http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2011/07/07/fun-in-the-sun-2/ http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2011/07/07/fun-in-the-sun-2/#comments Fri, 08 Jul 2011 04:16:02 +0000 Madelyn http://phamsterworld.com/blog/?p=857 We have been waiting for months to go to New York. Mommy and Daddy told us that “in the summer” we’d go on vacation to visit our East Coast family, so I kept asking and asking them if it was summer yet, and finally they said yes! Here’s a slideshow of our pictures.

We got to go on a big airplane ride and I tried my best to stay up all night, but I ended up sleeping for a little bit. When I woke up it was morning and raining in New Jersey and me and Hayden slept for a loooong time while Daddy drove us to Albany. I was so super excited to get there and see Aunt Monica and my cousins TJ, Jimmy and Malcolm. Malcolm graduated from high school and I was almost as proud of him as I was in love with his cute graduating teddy bear.

The next day we hopped back in the car again and brought TJ along for a weekend on the Jersey Shore with new (Emily, Jacob, Tommy, Sarah and Olivia) and old (Greg, Karen, Faris, Lisa, TJ and Heather) friends. We slept some more in the car, and then had lots of energy for the BEACH in Point Pleasant. Hayden wasn’t so fond of the sand the first day, but I kept telling her to “try it and you might LIKE it” and she finally joined me in some digging.

Driving to Jersey Dads and girls

Then came the BOARDWALK, which I loved except for the times when I was busy whining and being bratty because I’d skipped my nap. Despite my bad behavior, I still got to watch Daddy win and loose at Whack-a-Mole, and I got to go on super-fun airplane and swing rides with TJ.

Boardwalk rides! Bye Bye Jersey Shore
On Monday, we played some more with all our new friends and then said goodbye and hopped back in the car for another nap on the road back to Albany. The rest of the week we had lots of great family time with the cousins, aunt, uncle and grandma, and visiting special people, like the DiPietros, Barbara and daddy’s high school friends Elana and Margaret.

My favorite part of the whole week was probably going to Build-a-Bear with Aunt Monica and picking out a fancy outfit for my new Hello Kitty doll, who I named Hello Sparkles. She is so beautiful and fabulous. Hayden got a cute teddy bear with an SU t-shirt, and dad named him Watson (the name of the college dorm where mom and dad met).

Thanks to everyone who took the time to see us and especially to you guys who spoiled me rotten – you know who you are!

- Maddy

P.S. When we got back we had a super-fun block party with all our neighbors on the 4th of July. I loved eating lots of watermelon and treats, blowing lots of bubbles, watching fireworks, and riding around like a crazy woman on Hayden’s tricycle.

Winter Wonderland http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2011/03/03/winter-wonderland/ http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2011/03/03/winter-wonderland/#comments Fri, 04 Mar 2011 06:57:52 +0000 Meagan http://phamsterworld.com/blog/?p=740 So, needless to say, it’s been a busy couple months with very little blogging happening, but lots of other stuff going on in Phamster World. Here are a few of the big recent events from our first Portland winter (during which we’ve been trying not to notice the constant grayness)…

Goodbye Yahoo...

Most recently, I turned in my badge and said farewell to Yahoo! after almost 6 great and crazy years. I now have 2 new bosses named Madelyn and Hayden who are quite the task masters. My first 2 weeks of being a stay-at-home mom have been ridiculously fun. It’s definitely all-consuming, and I can’t believe how little “real stuff” I get done each day, but the girls constantly entertain and exhaust me with their antics and their demands for my attention.

1st Dentist Appt

I took Maddy and Hayden to “World of Smiles” for their first dentist appointments together in January. They both loved it, and did great – there were no tears or even hesitation about anything. I was impressed at how over-the-top this pediatric dentist was with the toys and bribery gifts. We’ll see how long they think it’s a treat to go to the dentist ;)

New Years display @ Bellagios

Over MLK weekend, Dave and I had our first weekend away from the kids. It was surprisingly easy to deal with toddler withdrawal and relax in Las Vegas. It was great to celebrate our anniversary ALONE, and we had fun eating and sleeping whenever we wanted. Thanks to the amazing help from my mom and all my family, the girls had tons of fun at home without us, and I think Maddy’s looking forward to the next time we leave town.

At the beginning of February, we took a family trip to Utah to see my dad, siblings, and extended family. We got to be there for my grandpa’s 80th birthday, which was wonderful.

Despite Hayden’s ear infection, we had a very fun visit and were able to get some fabulous portraits done by my uncle Drake at the wonderful Busath Photography. I can’t wait to hang them up in our house.

Maddy had a blast playing with her cousin Addi, and Hayden fearlessly got to know the family dog, Forbes – she first learned the word “dog” in Utah (today we saw a dog outside the library, and she got all excited and said “dog dog dog!”). Here are some photos and videos from the visit…

Dragon dancing - M&E

We also celebrated the Lunar New Year last month, and went with the family to Portland’s Chinese Garden for some festivities. Maddy’s absolute favorite part was the mini dragon/lion costume she got to try on. It was pretty tough to get her to take it off…

Cousins sleepover!

The next week, my mom hosted a cousins sleepover at her condo with Maddy and her cousins Sage (6), Jude (3) and Eva (3).

Snow!

Maddy gets pretty hyper when she’s around them, so we didn’t know how much sleep would actually happen, but apparently it was a wild success. Ever since, she’s been asking when she can go back for another sleepover.

Maddy and I had a blast during one of Portland’s rare snow days. It didn’t last long, but we had fun throwing snowballs, building mini-snowmen, writing things with our footprints, catching snowflakes on our tongues, etc.

Holiday Summary http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2011/01/11/holiday-summary/ http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2011/01/11/holiday-summary/#comments Wed, 12 Jan 2011 07:15:40 +0000 Meagan http://phamsterworld.com/blog/?p=710 Our first holiday season in Portland was a good one, despite ear and lymph node infections, pink eye, weird rashes, and fevers. Here’s a quick run down and some pics…
Happy Holidays

12/5: Started decorating tree, which was a slow process because of Hayden’s “take down the ornaments” game.

12/11: Massive cousins sleepover with 7 kids and 6 adults
Cousins dinner party

12/12: Grandma (Ba Ngoai) took the cousins to see “Christmas Revels“, which they all loved. Maddy’s favorite part was the dragon I think.

12/19: 3 generations (Maddy, me and my mom) went to see the Nutcracker. Maddy actually sat mostly still and was fascinated by the part when Marie “fought” with the evil mouse king. She also liked the dragon in the Asian dance scene.
Maddy & Mommy Maddy and Ba Ngoai

12/24: Christmas Eve at our house with my mom, brother and grandparents. Would have been more fun if the day hadn’t been so hectic, including Hayden’s visit to urgent care after getting a 105 degree fever from an ear infection.
Urgent care Making cookies with Uncle Gavin!

12/25: Maddy and Hayden had lots of fun opening presents throughout the day on Christmas – thanks to everyone who gave them such wonderful gifts! One of the favorites was the “hip hop doll” from Ba Noi and Aunt Monica, as seen in this video:

We had a lovely evening and mini-birthday party for Dave at my mom’s house with more family, and all enjoyed his pistachio ice cream cake. I think he’s looking forward to the gift I gave him – a trip to Vegas with NO KIDS this coming weekend :)

12/31: Met up with the cousins at the Portland Children’s Museum for a fake New Years countdown and music for kids.

Dave also took Maddy to see a local production of Annie, her favorite movie, that afternoon. She enjoyed it but wasn’t thrilled that they had the “wrong Miss Hannigan and Daddy Warbucks.”
Maddy and Daddy at Annie Cousins

1/3: One last cousin playdate at Maren’s before going back to work and school.

1/6: Celebrated Hayden’s half-birthday.

1/11: 8th wedding anniversary for Dave and I (celebrations to commence this weekend).

So, that’s our Holidays in a nutshell. Right now we’re having a great visit with Dave’s nephew Jimmy, who Maddy adores, and after this weekend in Vegas I suppose we have to get back to regular life.

Dear Santa, http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2010/12/13/dear-santa/ http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2010/12/13/dear-santa/#comments Tue, 14 Dec 2010 05:09:24 +0000 Madelyn http://phamsterworld.com/blog/?p=695 Letter to Santa

Can I have…

A toy penguin?

A fishy barrette?

A new toy fire truck?

A goose whale like a toy bucket (no idea)?

A toy chest for my toys?

And friendship, sunshine, clean air, the stock market to go up (prompted by Dave)?

- MADDY

UPDATE: This morning I decided I needed to write an addendum to my letter. Here is what my mom helped me write:

Dear Santa,

I want a little bit more toys.

Can I have that jingle bells for my Christmas tree and that other ornament for Hayden she likes purple I like pink.

Can I have fishy barrette and socks and pajaymies and new underwear?

Love,
Maddy, Hayden, Mommy & Daddy

P.S. Below is a glimpse at us preparing our tree for your visit…

Fun in the Sun http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2010/12/01/fun-in-the-sun/ http://phamsterworld.com/blog/2010/12/01/fun-in-the-sun/#comments Wed, 01 Dec 2010 15:41:52 +0000 Meagan http://phamsterworld.com/blog/?p=691 We escaped to San Diego for Thanksgiving, and while we missed our always-fun family gatherings, it was nice to be somewhere with lots of sun and no rain. Our flights were less than pleasant, but we survived them and had a great time with college friends Amy and Joanne and their families.

Phamsters at sunset Enthralled
M&MM&D at the cave Loving Sea World
'Cuse friends Zoe & Elmo

The highlight of the trip was Sea World, where Maddy was mesmerized by Shamu, Elmo, Zoe, and pretty much everything else. She was reunited and became best buds with Amy’s 4-year-old Nathan (who now better get on Skype so she can stay in touch). Maddy was also extremely excited to hold Joanne’s 2-month-old Bradley and gave him many sweet kisses. Hayden had fun exploring new toys, and was an awesome sleeper despite the less-than-ideal schedule. Here are more photos:

In other news, Hayden’s adding a few more teeth and words to her repertoire. She now has 2 molars in the back, and finally her 4 front teeth on both the top and bottom. Her current vocabulary consists of “boo!,” “uh oh,” “hi!,” “mama,” and “dada.” Maddy’s getting pretty good with identifying letters and loves to practice “writing” them on my iPad with the alphabet apps we have.
